My work "To Market" attempts to capture the different and competing types of excitement and anticipation of going to the Public Market on a saturday morning in Rochester, New York including the cars, the crowds, the hustle and bustle.
At the center I have deliberately placed the farmer; he stands as the visually dominant image, restored to the center of the market experience, although at times it seems these archetypal American figures recede almost into anonymity. His hands and what he is growing are emphasized and brought to life through the use of ceramic. The figure of "the farmer," to me, represents the heart of the market. He is the source of the goods, the energies, the transactions, the excitement and anticipation that, on any Saturday morning, swirl around our Public Market.
This figure appears in cool colors – blue and green. The green used in his skin tones is meant to reflect his direct association with what he is growing, as an extension of himself, and reflective of fundamental life forces. The blues used in his clothing are representative of his hard work, and the hard work of the growers.
